Title: ‘I Just Have to Continue to Be Me’: Music Manager Who Survived Jet Set Nightclub Roof Collapse Tells His Story
The devastating roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic has left many lives irreparably changed. While some may have lost loved ones, others are still grappling with the trauma of surviving such a catastrophic event. For one music manager who wishes to remain anonymous, the night will be etched in his memory forever.
“I never thought about dying,” he shared with Billboard in an exclusive interview. “I was worried about my colleagues and friends who weren’t as lucky. When I realized I had escaped death, it hit me like a ton of bricks – I’m still here.”
The music manager, who has been working in the industry for over three decades, recounted the harrowing events that transpired on April 3rd when the Jet Set nightclub’s roof collapsed, killing at least eight people and injuring many more.
“I was dancing with friends when the ceiling started caving in. I remember thinking it was just a normal collapse or something – until I saw my friends get crushed. I had to act fast to protect myself and others around me.”
Pérez, who worked closely with Rubby Pérez, a renowned Merengue singer who sadly passed away during the disaster, spoke about his connection with the late artist.
“Rubby was more than just a client; he was my friend,” he expressed tears in his eyes. “He had an incredible talent and always inspired me to be true to myself. His loss is unbearable.”
The music manager emphasized the importance of resilience in such difficult times.
“I just have to continue being me, spreading love and positivity through music. If Rubby’s legacy lives on through me, then I’m honored to keep his spirit alive,” he stated, adding that this incident has made him re-evaluate his priorities.
“This experience has given me a newfound perspective – people’s lives are short-lived, but the impact they have can be felt for generations. I will not waste another minute; I’ll invest in the arts and support emerging artists like never before.”
As the music industry mourns the loss of Rubby Pérez, Billboard sends our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those affected by this tragedy.
