Ilya Sutskever taps Google Cloud to power his AI startup’s research
OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever has partnered with Google Cloud to fuel the AI research endeavors of his new startup, Safe Superintelligence (SSI). The collaboration will see SSI utilizing Google Cloud’s TPU chips to accelerate its development efforts in building a safe, superintelligent AI.
As per a press release, this deal marks a significant partnership between two prominent entities in the AI ecosystem. It is worth noting that Sutskever has a long history with Google, having spent several years at Google Brain researching neural networks before co-founding OpenAI.
SSI, which emerged from stealth mode in June 2024 following Sutskever’s departure from his role as OpenAI’s chief scientist, has secured $1 billion in backing from notable investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, SV Angel, and others. The startup’s mission is to develop safe, superintelligent AI systems, a task that it claims is its “mission, our name, and our entire product roadmap.”
While the details of SSI’s research endeavors are scarce at this time, it is clear that the company will be leveraging Google Cloud’s TPU chips to propel its progress.
