House GOP Tees Up Final Vote on Budget Blueprint as Conservative Opposition Hardens
House Republicans are preparing to hold a final vote on their budget blueprints, despite growing opposition from some of their own party members.
The House Rules Committee has approved the rules for consideration and passage of H.R. 1, the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) “A Better Budget” proposal, which sets out spending priorities for the next fiscal year.
However, the move comes as conservative lawmakers are increasingly vocal in their opposition to the budget blueprint. They argue that it does not go far enough to address the national debt and instead perpetuates the status quo of excessive spending.
Reps. Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas) have been particularly vocal in their criticism, claiming that the proposal would not significantly reduce the deficit or tackle the growing national debt.
In a statement, Roy said: “This budget blueprint is a failure because it does nothing to address the $32 trillion debt. It’s just more of the same old spending and debt, and it will not improve the economy.”
Harris added that the proposal was a “repackaged” version of previous failed budgets.
The opposition comes as the Senate is expected to vote on its own budget resolution later this week, which would permanently extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts.
