The Guardrails Against Authoritarianism Are Not Holding
In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his famous “Four Freedoms” speech, outlining four essential human rights that must be protected and defended by democratic societies. These freedoms – freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear – have become a cornerstone of American values.
Seventy years later, the United States is once again facing a critical moment where these guardrails against authoritarianism are failing to hold. The current administration’s actions demonstrate an alarming disregard for the separation of powers and the rule of law.
In recent times, we have seen the Department of Justice (DOJ) under Attorney General Pam Bondi’s leadership ignore or undermine existing legal frameworks, particularly in regards to executive overreach. This lack of accountability has emboldened a president who has consistently demonstrated disdain for the Constitution and its protections.
The current situation is eerily reminiscent of 1930s Germany, where the Weimar Republic’s institutional checks were repeatedly disregarded by Adolf Hitler, allowing his regime to take root. The parallels are unsettling – just as the German government at that time failed to protect individual rights, our nation is witnessing a similar erosion of protections.
The recent appointment of Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court has only exacerbated these concerns. With Justice Roberts’ history of judicial restraint and deference to executive power, there is little reason to believe that he will be willing to challenge the administration’s overreach.
