Google is rolling out Pixel Watch 3’s ‘loss of pulse detection’ feature in the US
Google has begun rolling out the loss of pulse detection feature for Pixel Watch 3 devices in the United States. This innovative technology checks for a user’s pulse when the watch is worn on the wrist and, if it detects no pulse, automatically calls emergency services. The feature was initially introduced in several European countries last year, but only gained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this February.
The feature utilizes concurrent passive algorithms to monitor the presence of a pulse every second. If no pulse is detected, active sensors engage to verify that the absence of a pulse is not due to the user removing their watch or some other environmental factor. It’s only at this point that the device enters Stage 1 alert mode, sending a gentle haptic notification and prompting the user to tap “I’m OK” on the screen. If no response is received, the alerts escalate with added sounds, counting down before automatically calling emergency services.
Google emphasizes that this feature has the potential to save lives in situations where every second counts, such as cardiac or respiratory arrest, or poisoning incidents where prompt medical attention is essential but may not be immediately available. Unfortunately, it’s a reality that up to half of all loss-of-pulse events related to cardiac arrest occur without witnesses present. This technology aims to address this issue by rapidly connecting users in need with medical assistance and potentially preventing long-term damage.
In summary, the ‘loss of pulse detection’ feature is now available on Pixel Watch 3 devices in the US, offering an added layer of protection and potentially lifesaving benefits.
