U.S. Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) took aim at President Trump’s reciprocal tariff policies during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program today. In a sharp rebuke of the administration’s actions, Kennedy warned that retaliatory measures will only harm American businesses and workers.
“I think we’re in danger of getting into a tit-for-tat situation where we’re just trading blows back and forth,” Kennedy said, stressing that this approach is unsustainable for both countries. “I don’t think that’s good policy.”
Instead, the Louisiana Republican urged the administration to engage in diplomatic efforts with other nations, citing successful trade agreements with Canada and Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“I am not convinced that we need to go down a path of reciprocal tariffs,” Kennedy emphasized. “I think we should be using diplomacy to get what we want.”
Kennedy’s comments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing, as well as escalating trade disputes with other nations worldwide.
