UFC 314 Predictions: Can Jim Miller Pull Off The Upset Win In Miami?
This Saturday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will touch down in Miami with a stacked card that features some of the sport’s most talented and exciting fighters. However, one bout stands out as particularly intriguing: the lightweight matchup between Chase Hooper and Jim Miller.
Hooper is no longer just the nerdy-looking journalist turned mixed martial artist that looks like he’s at a fantasy camp. He’s long and a bit awkward, but he has seemingly learned to use that to his benefit. After an undefeated run on the regional scene, he earned his spot on the UFC’s roster and has gone 7-3 in the big show. Hooper is approaching his prime as a fighter, with a four-fight win streak that includes victories over Nick Fiore, Jordan Leavitt, Viacheslav Borshchev, and Clay Guida.
On paper, this looks like a mismatch. Miller is a grizzled veteran who has been in the UFC for over 15 years, with a record of 23-17 in the promotion. However, don’t count him out just yet. Despite being nearly 15 years older than Hooper, Miller remains an elite grappler and one of the most underrated strikers in the sport.
While some may see this as an opportunity for Hooper to become a “legend killer,” it’s important to note that Miller has only been submitted three times in his professional career. Those defeats came at the hands of Nate Diaz, Michael Chiesa, Charles Oliveira, and one other (which was seven years ago). Miller is not someone who gives up easily.
I expect Hooper to look for a finish early on, trying to catch Miller in a submission or knock him out with his improved striking. However, I think Miller will be able to weather the storm and take over as the fight goes on. As it turns out, I’m picking Miller to win by split decision in an upset.
For those who may be unfamiliar with Miller’s career, he has been known for his ability to pull off shocking upsets throughout his career. He’s a true veteran of the sport and knows how to win when people least expect him to.
