Title: ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Episode 8 is the Show it Always Should Have Been
As I watched episode 8 of Daredevil: Born Again, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of frustration. Why? Because this episode, and the one that follows with the return of Frank Castle and Karen, are the two episodes that were crafted fully outside the old draft. The result is a cohesive and thrilling storyline that has been missing from the season so far.
The episode started strong with Bullseye’s return, which immediately brought back some of the excitement and tension that was present in the early seasons. His escape was a thing of beauty, using his extracted tooth to take out a guard and then targeting Kingpin. The sequence was a masterclass in storytelling, weaving together multiple plot threads seamlessly.
The rest of the episode was just as impressive, with Matt’s interactions with Heather and Fisk reaching a boiling point. The reveal that Vanessa was responsible for Foggy’s death added an extra layer of complexity to the story and made me forget about the previous episodes’ disjointed pacing.
What’s particularly notable is how well this episode works without Matt in his Daredevil suit. It’s as if the writers finally found their footing, embracing the dark and gritty tone that fans love. The payoff at the end, with Matt taking a bullet for Kingpin, was stunning and served as a reminder of why I loved this show so much.
It’s a shame that we didn’t get more episodes like this throughout the season. While it’s not all bad news – the upcoming season 2 is an all-new creation – it’s frustrating to see how close the show came to being great earlier on.
