Court Document Reveals Locations of WhatsApp Victims Targeted by NSO Spyware
A recent court document has shed light on the extent of a massive hacking campaign carried out by NSO Group’s notorious Pegasus spyware, which was used to target 1,223 WhatsApp users in 51 different countries. The document, part of an ongoing lawsuit filed against NSO Group by Meta-owned WhatsApp in 2019, reveals the locations of these victims for the first time.
According to the court filing, Mexico had the largest number of targeted users, with a staggering 456 individuals affected by the surveillance tech. India followed closely behind with 100 victims, while Bahrain and Morocco had significantly fewer, with 82 and 69 users respectively targeted. Pakistan and Indonesia also had a significant number of victims, at 58 and 54 respectively.
The list also revealed that there were victims in Western countries such as Spain, the Netherlands, Hungary, France, United Kingdom, and the United States, indicating that governments or organizations may have been using NSO Group’s services to spy on individuals across the globe.
