Trump Ends Biden-Era Water Regulations to ‘Make America’s Showers Great Again’
In a move aimed at “making America’s showers great again,” the White House announced on Tuesday that President Donald Trump has ended an Obama-era regulation limiting showerhead flow rates, citing excessive regulations as a hindrance to innovation and economic growth.
The decision reverses former President Joe Biden’s reinstatement of stricter standards for showerheads in 2024. The new policy would allow showerheads to have a maximum water flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm), up from the previous limit of 1.6 gpm.
“The Order frees Americans from excessive regulations that turned a basic household item into a bureaucratic nightmare,” the White House said in a statement. “No longer will showerheads be weak and worthless.”
The administration claims the rollback will not only promote innovation but also create jobs and boost the economy by reducing regulatory barriers for American businesses.
However, environmentalists and health advocates have long argued that stricter water conservation standards are essential to reduce energy waste and harmful carbon pollution while saving Americans billions of dollars per year on energy and water bills.
In a statement, former U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm emphasized the importance of these regulations in achieving significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a sustainable future for our nation’s households.
Despite these concerns, the Trump administration maintains that its decision will not compromise national security or public health.
