Sony has emerged victorious in its bid to take over the distribution of popular game shows “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!,” after a Los Angeles court rejected CBS’ request for a preliminary injunction.
The ruling, issued by Superior Court Judge Kevin Brazile, states that Sony can begin distributing the shows and does not need to deliver episodes to CBS. This marks a significant victory for Sony, which had filed a complaint in October 2024 alleging that CBS entered into unauthorized licensing agreements and failed to maximize advertising revenue, among other alleged contract violations.
As part of its complaint, Sony claimed that it was entitled to take over the distribution of the shows due to these alleged breaches. The court’s ruling supports this claim, paving the way for Sony to assume control over the popular programs.
CBS Media Ventures has stated that it will immediately appeal the decision and seek a stay pending its appeal. In a statement, the company said that “this is only a preliminary ruling based on partial evidence, not the outcome of the full case.” CBS expressed confidence in its ability to prevail once all evidence is heard at trial.
Sony, for its part, has not commented publicly on the matter.
The decision marks a significant shift in the distribution landscape for these iconic game shows, which have been staples of American television since their debut in 1975.
