Rebooted Digg launches early-access community with $5 fee
The reboot of early-internet social news site Digg is underway. Original founder Kevin Rose and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian have launched an early-access community for some of the first people who signed up after last month’s announcement that the pair had bought Digg and planned to relaunch it as something new.
The early-access program, dubbed “Groundbreakers,” comes with a one-time fee of $5. According to Digg, this fee is aimed at keeping bots out of the community rather than making money. Notably, the proceeds from these fees will be donated to a nonprofit chosen by the community itself.
As part of this exclusive group, members will gain access to updates, mockups, and experiments related to the platform’s rebuild. Additionally, they will receive a front-row seat to witness how Digg is being rebuilt firsthand. The opportunity to secure usernames before anyone else is also included, along with a unique “Groundbreakers badge” on their profile, signifying that they were part of building this new iteration of Digg from the ground up.
The community experience for Groundbreakers will be run on Circle, a web-based platform designed specifically for creators. At the time of writing, it remains unclear how many people managed to join the early-access program due to some issues with the signup process and chat on Circle being slow and buggy in the morning. Nevertheless, by the time this article was published, nearly 3,000 individuals had already joined.
Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian acquired Digg previously.
