A new CBS News poll has found that Americans are increasingly concerned about the potential financial impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff plans. The survey results show a majority of respondents expressing worry about the consequences of these policies.
The poll, conducted between April 8-11, 2025, reveals that more and more people believe the economy is getting worse, with a slight majority (51%) saying so. This marks a shift from last month’s numbers, which showed a small majority expecting economic stability.
Notably, the survey also found that Trump gets better marks for handling immigration than he does for managing the economy or inflation. However, his approval ratings have remained relatively consistent across these metrics over time.
The data shows that independents are disapproving of Trump’s performance at an increasingly high rate. This change has contributed to a slight decrease in his overall approval rating.
It is interesting to note that while opinions about the state of the economy vary along partisan lines, Republicans are becoming more positive about its outlook due to their confidence in Mr. Trump and general optimism. In contrast, Democrats and independents have become increasingly pessimistic.
The poll further highlights the stark difference between Republican and Democratic perspectives on trade policy. When it comes to sources of information on tariffs and their impact, a significant majority of Republicans trust Mr. Trump “a lot,” whereas only a minority of Democrats hold the same level of confidence in him.
