NCAA Woman of the Year Among Those Killed in New York Plane Crash: ‘Lost a Lot of Very Good People’
A private plane owned by Michael Groff crashed in a muddy field in New Jersey, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including NCAA Woman of the Year Karenna Groff. The tragic accident occurred on Saturday.
According to NTSB official Todd Inman, the aircraft was found “compressed, buckled and embedded in the terrain” of the field. Video footage obtained by authorities showed that the plane was intact before crashing at a high rate of descent into the ground.
Karenna Groff, who attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was tragically killed in the crash along with James Santoro. The two individuals lived in New York City and were pronounced dead at the scene.
James’ father, John Santoro, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, describing the Groffs as a “wonderful family.” He further stated that “the world lost a lot of very good people who were going to do a lot of good for the world if they had the opportunity. We’re all personally devastated.”
Karenna Groff’s untimely passing is a devastating loss, not only for her loved ones but also for the community at large. Her achievements and contributions will never be forgotten.
The NTSB has stated that the pilot was flying under instrument flight rules instead of visual flight rules, which may have contributed to the fatal crash.
