Apple has announced a new approach to improving its AI models, which involves privately analyzing user data using synthetic data and differential privacy. In a blog post, the company outlined how it will be generating synthetic data that mimics real-world scenarios and then comparing them with actual user data to improve its machine learning algorithms.
The move comes as Apple faces criticism over the underwhelming performance of some of its AI-powered features, such as notification summaries. By using synthetic data, Apple aims to reduce the need for collecting and analyzing sensitive user information while still enabling it to develop more accurate and efficient AI models.
According to the company’s blog post, the process involves generating a large set of synthetic messages on various topics, which are then used to create a representation, or “embedding,” that captures key properties of the message. These embeddings are then sent to a small number of user devices that have opted-in to share device analytics with Apple.
By comparing these synthetic embeddings with actual emails, Apple can identify which models are most accurate and use this information to improve its AI algorithms for features like Genmoji, Image Playground, Image Wand, Memories Creation, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.
In addition to improving its AI models through synthetic data analysis, Apple also plans to use the approach to enhance email summaries. By collecting feedback from users who opt-in to share device analytics, Apple can refine its AI models and provide more personalized and relevant notifications to its customers.
The company’s approach is based on the concept of differential privacy, which involves adding random noise to the data to protect user privacy while still enabling the development of accurate AI models. By using this method, Apple believes it can improve the performance of its AI products without compromising user trust or privacy concerns.
In a statement, Apple emphasized that its goal is to create more accurate and efficient AI models while also prioritizing user privacy.
