Meta has received regulatory approval from the European Union to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models using publicly available content from adult social media users. The company announced yesterday that it will start using posts and comments from users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger platforms to improve its AI services.
According to Meta’s announcement, certain data remains off-limits, including private messages with friends and family, as well as public data from EU account holders under the age of 18. The company has also ensured that there will be an opt-out option for users who do not want their content used in this manner.
Meta will begin notifying its European users about these changes starting this week, sending both in-app and email notifications to inform them about what data it plans to use and how it will improve its AI services. These notifications will include a link to a form where users can opt out of having their content used for training purposes.
Meta’s decision comes as the EU has started implementing its AI Act, which establishes a legal framework for artificial intelligence technology that includes provisions for data quality, security, and privacy.
