Maul: Shadow Lord Is Star Wars’ Next Animated Series
Star Wars Celebration marked Lucasfilm Animation’s 20th anniversary with a forward-looking announcement today during a panel celebrating the studio’s history. The news has been confirmed, as announced at the event: the studio is moving on to its next animated series and it will be none other than a Darth Maul-led show. This new title, Maul: Shadow Lord, appears to be focused on Maul building out his Crimson Dawn crime syndicate.
The trailer displayed to the enthusiastic crowd gathered in Tokyo, Japan showcased various criminal factions like the Pykes reeling from attacks on shipments, only for Maul to unveil himself as the architect of this chaos. Notably, an intriguing aspect of the entire trailer was that Maul discovers a young new apprentice in the ways of the Force – a young Twi’lek girl he frees from captivity and then begins instructing.
In addition to her tutelage, we see shots of gang wars, intense chases through the hustle and bustle of a city planet (not unlike Coruscant), as well as an encounter with the Inquisitorius in the guise of Ahsoka’s Marrok, who expresses his astonishment that Maul has survived even as he draws sabers with him.
This information comes amid a busy weekend at Star Wars Celebration where multiple other announcements have been made.
