Microsoft’s Password Deletion for 1 Billion Users – Do This Now
As the technology giant Microsoft takes a bold step towards phasing out passwords from over a billion user accounts, it’s time to take action and start adopting passkeys as an alternative. The company has emphasized that passwords are no longer a secure solution, and in fact, blocks 7,000 password-related attacks per second – almost double the number from last year.
To address this issue, Microsoft is introducing passkeys, which replace traditional password and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes with account authentication linked to the security of your device or devices. This means that even if an attacker tries to steal your credentials, they won’t be able to log in without having access to your device.
While passkeys are not a foolproof solution against AI-based attacks that can trick users into clicking malicious links, they do provide an additional layer of security. Moreover, they eliminate the risk of password theft and phishing attempts.
In order to set up a personal Microsoft passkey, users need to follow these steps:
1. Sign in to your Microsoft account and go to Advanced Security Options.
2. Choose Add a new way to sign in or verify and select Face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key.
3. Follow the instructions on your device.
For school or work accounts, the process is slightly different. Users need to follow these steps:
1. Sign in to your own Security Info.
2. Choose Add sign-in method and select Passkey or Passkey in Microsoft Authenticator.
3. Follow the instructions on your device.
It’s essential to note that passwords are likely to remain in place, but it’s crucial to change them simultaneously and ensure they are unique and managed by a reputable password manager. Additionally, users should add the most secure form of 2FA available.
Microsoft is urging users to prioritize the setup of passkeys for each account as soon as possible. In fact, all major platforms and services now offer passkey security, so it’s time to take action.
