Meta’s Oversight Board Seeks Details on Company’s New Hate Speech Policies
The independent group created to help Meta with content moderation decisions has requested additional information about the social media company’s recent changes to its hate speech policies. In a statement released yesterday, the Oversight Board emphasized that Meta’s new policies were “announced hastily, in a departure from regular procedure” and urged the company to provide more transparency on its rules.
The request comes after Meta announced a slew of policy changes aimed at increasing the amount of content allowed on its platforms. The move sparked widespread criticism from civil rights groups and advocacy organizations who argued that the new policies would disproportionately harm marginalized communities.
In its statement, the Oversight Board also asked Meta to assess the impact of these policies on vulnerable user groups and publish those findings publicly. Furthermore, the Board requested that Meta update it every six months regarding any changes made to these policies.
The Board has been critical of Meta’s previous policy decisions, including a recent set of cases where it upheld the company’s decision to leave up content that some users deemed offensive or discriminatory.
