Title: North Carolina town destroyed by Hurricane Helene hoping to welcome tourists back by midsummer
A devastating storm has left a small town in North Carolina facing a long and arduous recovery process. The destruction caused by Hurricane Helene is staggering, with thousands of volunteers working tirelessly to rebuild the community.
Chimney Rock, once a popular tourist destination, lies in ruins after the destructive storm ripped through the area. The town’s residents are determined to restore their home to its former glory and welcome visitors back by midsummer.
“It’ll be a two-year recovery,” said Lidya Gongage, a resident of Chimney Rock. “And it’ll never be the same.”
Despite the odds against them, the town’s residents have shown remarkable resilience in the face of disaster. Over 2,000 volunteers have arrived to assist with the rebuilding efforts, including contractors with heavy machinery.
“We’re trying to build back the best we can and give people back what they lost,” said Jake Jarvis, owner of Precision Grading, who is working on a boulder wall for a lot where the home was washed away by the storm. “If we can’t give them [a] house, [we] can give them a place to build a house.”
The recovery efforts are fueled by donations, which has allowed the contractors to afford the materials needed to restore the town.
While the road to recovery will be long and challenging, the residents of Chimney Rock remain committed to their goal of welcoming tourists back by midsummer.
