Ledger Scammers Turn to Snail Mail to Steal Funds
A new scam has emerged, targeting Ledger hardware wallet users by sending out fraudulent letters requesting sensitive information. The scammers are posing as the company and claiming that a “critical security update” is necessary, asking users to scan a QR code leading to a site where they would be prompted to share their 24-word recovery phrase.
According to reports, the scam appears to exploit data from Ledger’s 2020 data breach, which exposed personal information of approximately 270,000 customers. The compromised database included names, phone numbers, and physical addresses, providing scammers with the means to execute targeted attacks.
In an effort to protect against such scams, Ledger advises users to be cautious and vigilant. Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone, including Ledger staff or any other third-party entity. It is essential to only use official Ledger channels for communication and software downloads to ensure authenticity.
Additionally, it is crucial to be skeptical of unsolicited messages or letters requesting sensitive information. If you receive a suspicious letter or message, report it to Ledger immediately and avoid interacting with the content altogether.
Ledger emphasizes that they will never ask for users’ recovery phrases, stating, “Ledger will never call, DM, or ask for your 24-word recovery phrase. If someone does, it’s a scam.”
