Pinterest has recently announced a new feature that aims to tackle the issue of AI-generated content flooding its platform. As of now, users will be able to see when image Pins have been either generated or modified using artificial intelligence (AI). This label will appear in the bottom left-hand corner of the image when viewed in close-up.
According to Pinterest’s blog post, this feature has been under development for several months. The company claims that it uses metadata analysis to assess the source of an image and detect potential AI modifications. Additionally, they are working on developing classifiers that can automatically identify the presence of generative AI even if no metadata markers are present.
The success of this new feature will be revealed as it rolls out globally. Moreover, creators who believe their content has been mislabeled will have the opportunity to appeal and correct any inaccuracies.
It is worth noting that this issue has been a problem for Meta in the past, particularly on Facebook and Instagram. This led them to adjust the wording of AI labels applied to uploaded photos after photographers complained that they were being added to images that did not involve AI creation. In some cases, even minimal use of Photoshop’s generative fill tool was enough to trigger an AI label.
Pinterest will likely need to be mindful of this issue as it refines its algorithm.
In addition to these labels, Pinterest is also experimenting with a feature that would enable users to filter out categories where AI modification or generation is more prevalent, such as beauty and art.
