Apple has been hit with a whopping settlement order of $502 million by the UK courts for infringing on patents owned by Optis Cellular Technology LLC. The ruling is a significant escalation from a previous order, which was issued in 2023 and required Apple to pay just over $56 million plus interest.
The lawsuit, which was originally filed in London courts back in 2019, centered around allegations that Apple had improperly used cellular technology patents, including those governing 4G networks, in their iPads and iPhones. Optis, a patent troll based out of Texas, successfully argued that the initial settlement was far too low, leading to the massive increase in damages ordered today.
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Apple has found themselves on the receiving end of a patent infringement lawsuit. The company has been embroiled in numerous similar disputes over the years, both with other tech giants and with so-called “patent trolls.”
