Northern Lights Forecast: 11 States May See Aurora Borealis This Weekend
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center is predicting geomagnetic activity that could result in aurora borealis sightings in as many as 11 U.S. states on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
According to NOAA, auroral displays are possible in northern U.S. states and Canada, with areas far from light pollution likely to get the best views. The following U.S. states have a chance of seeing the Northern Lights on the northern horizon:
* Alaska
* Washington
* Northern Idaho
* Montana
* Northern Wyoming
* North Dakota
* South Dakota
* Minnesota
* Wisconsin
* Michigan
* Maine
While predictions are made, NASA’s DSCOVR and ACE satellites will provide real-time data to determine exactly when and where the aurora becomes visible. For up-to-the-minute forecasts, check NOAA’s 30-minute forecast or use the Glendale App.
If you’re looking to capture a photo of this natural phenomenon, ensure your smartphone has a “Night Mode” feature. This should be good enough for impressive shots, but keep in mind that it is important to:
1. Use your primary lens (NOT super-wide lens)
2. Use a basic smartphone holder and a small tripod to prevent camera shake
3. Shoot in raw if possible
Remember, you can also support your phone on something solid like a gatepost or vehicle if needed.
The Northern Lights are caused by the solar wind interacting with Earth’s magnetic field, exciting atoms that release energy as light. This phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules at higher altitudes.
A significant spike in solar activity is currently driving the current solar maximum period, which is expected to continue through 2025 and 2026.
Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes!
