Volkswagen has issued a recall for 5,637 of its 2025 ID.Buzz electric vans due to an issue with the rear seating. According to a note from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the van’s third row is designed to accommodate two people, but its width exceeds the standards for accommodating only two occupants.
As reported by Electrek, the recall affects vehicles manufactured between September 18, 2024 and February 11, 2025. This means that the affected vans were released in the US market as early as November 2024 and have been on sale since then.
The issue is a serious one, as it poses a significant risk to passenger safety. The third row of the ID.Buzz, while not intended for three occupants, is wide enough to easily accommodate a third person. However, there are only two seatbelts installed for this row, leaving any additional passengers without proper protection in the event of an accident.
To address this issue, Volkswagen plans to install permanent “unpadded trim parts” to limit the seating surface width and prevent passengers from sitting on the rear bench beyond a certain point. This fix is intended to ensure that occupants are properly secured and protected in the event of a crash.
The 2025 ID.Buzz electric van was initially launched in the US market with a starting price of $60,000 and an estimated range of 234 miles on a full charge. The vehicle also comes in a variety of color options.
