How ‘Real Women Have Curves’ Went From 2002 Film to 2025 Tony Nominee: ‘It’s Like It Should Have Always Been a Musical’
The Broadway show, which follows the journey of Ana García, a cutely chubby, super smart daughter of undocumented immigrant parents, has received two Tony nominations. The musical, directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, was born out of his desire to empower the Latino community through music. He teamed up with producer Jack Noseworthy, who focused on finding Latino stories to do so.
At first, Trujillo didn’t pay much attention to the material. His husband, though, had a different view. His insistence led him to re-read the play and learn that it was originally meant to be a musical from the start. Trujillo’s connection with the story resonated deeply with his own experiences as an immigrant and seeing women in his family make sacrifices for their children.
The show, which has received widespread acclaim, stars Justina Machado as Ana’s mother, Carmen García. Despite not receiving nominations in categories such as best musical or best actress, Trujillo hopes that the show will inspire Latino participation in theater.
