Jonathan Mayers, the co-founder and creative force behind iconic festivals like Bonnaroo and Outside Lands, has sadly passed away. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
Mayers started his career in the music industry through his work with renowned New Orleans venue Tipitina’s and the long-running Jazz Fest celebration. He later co-founded promotion company Superfly in 1996 with Rick Farman, Richard Goodstone, and Kerry Black, and staged its first concert during Mardi Gras with the Meters, Maceo Parker, and Rebirth Brass Band.
In 2002, Mayers was part of the team that launched and sold out the inaugural Bonnaroo festival. The event became a groundbreaking blueprint for numerous other music festivals across the United States. He partnered with Ashley Capps from AC Entertainment, Chip Hooper from Paradigm, and Coran Capshaw from Red Light to make this massive festival come to life.
In addition to his work on Bonnaroo, Mayers co-founded Outside Lands in 2008 with Another Planet Entertainment. The festival became an essential part of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene.
Later in his career, Jonathan also worked with Viacom and Comedy Central to create a large-scale indoor/outdoor comedy festival called Clusterfest that featured appearances by prominent comedians such as Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Jon Stewart, and Trevor Noah.
As his relationships with his co-founders at Superfly began to deteriorate during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayers started working on a new project named Core City Detroit.
