Why Artists Are Turning to Fans to Help Pay for Healthcare

As Jon Dee Graham, the Austin guitarist and songwriter who played in the beloved local punk band True Believers, has slipped and fallen, he is facing a daunting reality: his family can’t afford the medication needed to treat his condition.
The 66-year-old musician is not alone. In recent years, musicians such as Rodney Brown, Pioneering ‘Funky Broadway’ Drummer Dead at 78, Jesse Malin, rockers Matthew Sweet and Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen, have taken a more radical approach: turning to fans for financial help.
