A New ‘Star Trek’ Comic Will Bring Captain Kirk Back to Life
IDW Publishing has just announced Star Trek: The Last Starship as a new addition to its line of Trek comics, and it’ll focus on a certain Starfleet hero who’s been dead since the big-screen events of 1994’s Star Trek: Generations. But how? Well, beyond the long-held notion that anything is possible in sci-fi, a notion that also applies to comic books, IDW has just announced that Captain Kirk will be “mysteriously resurrected” to face a disastrous event from the future of ‘Star Trek: Discovery.’ The Hollywood Reporter reports that the series debuts September 24 and marks a new direction for IDW’s Star Trek comics.
According to THR, this new era, led by writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing (who previously collaborated on IDW’s Eisner-nominated Star Trek series, which launched in 2022), will feature “a new crew, a new era, and a completely different tone” compared to other Star Trek works. And while fans of the franchise may have mixed feelings about this bold move, even newcomers can jump right into its world.
The comic book series takes place during the immediate aftermath of the Burn, which is a galaxy-wide disaster that caused the destruction of every active warp core, killing trillions and shattering the peace and stability the United Federation of Planets provided for seven centuries. The story will also be heavily influenced by IDW’s new flagship Trek title, marking a brand-new narrative thread in the Star Trek universe.
Star Trek fans should expect to see the distinctive visage of William Shatner serve as the model for The Last Starship ‘s Captain Kirk.
