Sam Altman says Meta tried and failed to poach OpenAI’s talent with $100M offers
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been actively working on staffing his new AI superintelligence team with top-tier AI researchers from competing labs, reportedly offering compensation packages worth upwards of $100 million. However, these efforts have been met with failure, as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed in a recent podcast interview.
According to Altman, Meta’s attempts to poach OpenAI’s talent were largely unsuccessful, as none of the company’s best researchers took the bait. In fact, the OpenAI CEO went so far as to suggest that his employees are wise not to have accepted Meta’s offers, citing the importance of focusing on innovation rather than just following a paycheck.
“It’s started making these giant offers to a lot of people on our team,” Altman said during the podcast. “You know, like $100 million signing bonuses, more than that in compensation per year… I’m really happy that, at least so far, none of our best people have decided to take him up on that.”
It appears that Meta’s focus on high-compensation packages has not been enough to sway OpenAI’s top talent. Altman believes that this approach may actually work against the company in the long run, stating that innovation is key to success and mere financial incentives will not be enough to drive progress.
This development marks a significant setback for Meta as it continues to struggle to keep pace with its AI-focused competitors like OpenAI.
