Pro-Israel Hacker Group Claims Responsibility for Iran’s Nobitex $49M Cyberattack
A pro-Israel hacker group has taken credit for a massive cyberattack on the Iranian cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex, resulting in the theft of approximately $48.65 million worth of crypto assets.
In an official statement, Nobitex confirmed that unauthorized access was gained to their hot wallets and reporting infrastructure, but ensured that customer assets held in cold storage remained unaffected. The exchange has also pledged full compensation through its insurance fund and internal reserves.
The hacking group, known as Gonjeshke Darande (Persian for “Predatory Sparrow”), took to social media to claim responsibility for the attack and issue a stark warning. In a graphic posted online, the hackers accused Nobitex of being at the heart of Iran’s efforts to finance terrorism worldwide and functioning as the regime’s mechanism for circumventing international sanctions.
Furthermore, Gonjeshke Darande threatened to release Nobitex’s source code and internal data within 24 hours, putting all remaining assets on the platform at risk. The group went as far as to state that “associating with regime terror financing and sanction violation infrastructure puts your assets at risk.”
The timing of this attack coincides with escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, with both sides intensifying their attacks. This cyberattack serves as a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by hackers in the cryptocurrency space.
It is worth noting that Nobitex has been previously linked to facilitating over 85% of crypto inflows to sanctioned entities and jurisdictions. A report from blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs earlier this year highlighted the exchange’s central role in global illicit finance flows.
