Crypto War: Iran’s Largest Crypto Exchange Nobitex Hit by $48M Israeli-Linked Hack
Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Nobitex, has been hit by a major hack that saw over $48 million stolen in USDT. The Israeli-linked cyber group Predatory Sparrow has taken responsibility for the breach.
According to reports, the attack occurred on June 18 and was quickly flagged by blockchain security firm Onchain Labs. Suspicious outflows from multiple Nobitex wallets linked to Tron were observed, which led to an immediate shutdown of the exchange’s website and app.
The motives behind this attack seem to be more political than financial, as the hackers have a history of targeting Iranian institutions. In their public post, they accused Nobitex of helping the Iranian regime bypass international sanctions and finance terrorism. The hackers even went so far as to say that working at Nobitex is equivalent to military service.
Nobitex has confirmed the breach and assured users that only a portion of funds were affected and that most assets are safely stored in cold wallets. The exchange remains offline as it investigates the full extent of the attack.
