A 33-year-old Florida father has been taken into custody by the Ormond Beach Police Department for his alleged involvement in the tragic death of his 18-month-old son, who was left inside a hot car for over three hours.
Scott Allen Gardner is facing charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect causing great bodily harm after an investigation revealed that he abandoned his toddler in a scorching vehicle while he attended to his personal needs. According to law enforcement officials, this egregious act of negligence led to the untimely demise of Sebastian, who succumbed to heatstroke.
Authorities claim that the unfortunate incident occurred on June 6 when Gardner allegedly left his son inside the car for over three hours, allowing the temperature inside the vehicle to skyrocket to a staggering 111 degrees Fahrenheit. A disturbing account revealed that the father gave multiple false accounts of what transpired on the day of Sebastian’s passing.
Law enforcement officials from the Ormond Beach Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office collaborated in Gardner’s arrest, which took place at his mother’s residence in Ormond Beach. This heinous crime is the seventh reported case of hot car-related child fatalities in 2025 and the 115th incident to occur in Florida.
As a stark reminder of the dangers posed by leaving children unattended in vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has emphasized that “never leave a child in a vehicle unattended for any length of time.”
