Simple Minds Reflects On 40 Years Of ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ And Their Enduring Bond
As Simple Minds embarks on its first full-scale North American tour in seven years, frontman Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill are not only celebrating four decades since the release of their iconic hit single “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” but also the incredible longevity of their musical partnership. The band’s current trek supports its latest concert album, Live in the City of Diamonds, which debuted in April.
In a candid conversation with Billboard, Kerr and Burchill open up about the camaraderie that has allowed them to maintain such an extraordinary run as a duo for nearly half a century – despite occasional disagreements. “We’re still able to have our rows and our fights,” Kerr acknowledges, chuckling. “We’re not always on the same page.” He recalls a recent instance where the tension escalated into a heated argument. “We had a screaming match last week, and everyone around us… Well, I think they said something like, ‘I’ve never heard such an intense screaming match,'” he shares with a laugh. “So afterwards, Charlie and I just felt embarrassed. You know, usually it’s not even about anything; someone will say the wrong thing, and that triggers [the conflict].”
However, Kerr emphasizes that these moments of discord are merely temporary setbacks, rather than permanent rifts. “But here’s the good news,” he remarks with a smile. “At the end of the day, there are no scars, no wounds. We get up the next day, and everything is fine.”
The songwriting duo celebrates its enduring bond by playing it out loud with their audience during this tour, which wraps up on June 22 in Noblesville, Ind., before moving to Europe on June 27.
