After a brief hiatus, popular adult content platform Pornhub has officially resumed operations in France following a court ruling regarding age verification measures.
As of June 19th, many porn sites, including Pornhub, YouPorn, and RedTube, ceased their activities to protest the new age verification law that would have required them to collect identification information from users. The law aimed to ensure compliance with European Union regulations.
However, in a significant turn of events, a French court has suspended the implementation of this law pending further evaluation of its conformity with EU guidelines.
In a statement provided to France24, Aylo, Pornhub’s parent company, highlighted the security risks associated with collecting user identification information. The company emphasized that any age verification method that requires ID or credit card information poses significant threats to users’ privacy and data protection.
Aylo has also expressed enthusiasm for more efficient approaches to age verification, citing examples from large tech companies like Microsoft and Apple that verify ages through device-level settings.
The French government plans to appeal this suspension decision to the Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court.
