Reddit in Talks with Worldcoin to Identify Users – Sparks Privacy Concerns
The popular social media platform, Reddit, is reportedly in talks with Tools for Humanity to integrate their iris-scanning technology, known as World ID, which aims to verify users without compromising their identity. This move raises concerns about the potential impact on user privacy and the level of control it may grant to platforms.
According to reports, the partnership seeks to address issues related to fake accounts, AI-generated content, and new regulations requiring online platforms to verify users’ ages. Reddit’s plan does not involve making this technology mandatory; instead, it would be offered as one of several verification options available to users.
The integration of World ID would allow users to confirm their identity and age anonymously through the creation of an encrypted credential generated from the iris scan. Furthermore, the system automatically blocks attempts by individuals deemed to be under 18 years old.
