Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the talented actor behind the infamous character of Negan on AMC’s The Walking Dead, has spoken candidly about his reservations regarding a pivotal moment in the show’s timeline. During an interview with First We Feast alongside Lauren Cohan, who portrayed Maggie Rhee, Morgan expressed his doubts about Glenn’s brutal demise at the hands of his trusty baseball bat, Lucille.
“I’m just gonna say this, it would have made both our lives easier, maybe not kill Glenn,” Morgan revealed, acknowledging that altering the plotline might have had a significant impact on the show’s narrative. “It would have shifted the stories in a lot of ways, but you wouldn’t be mad at me.”
Cohan added her thoughts to Morgan’s statement, suggesting that an alternate fate for Glenn might have led to an unexpected friendship between the characters. “Wait, maybe we’d be like buddies!” she joked, to which Morgan concurred, stating, “Yeah, we’d probably be buddies!”
Morgan’s comments come as a surprise, considering the show’s creators’ dedication to staying true to the original comic book series. Nevertheless, his confession highlights the devastating impact Glenn’s death had on the show’s ratings and popularity.
The Walking Dead decided to change many aspects of its source material but chose to maintain Negan’s infamous killing spree intact. The show saw a drastic decline in viewership following Glenn’s demise, with a staggering loss of two million viewers by the next episode. Subsequently, the series never recovered from this drop-off.
Interestingly, Morgan expressed his willingness to make amends for the ill-fated decision by stating that Glenn would have met an untimely demise in another way, potentially altering the trajectory of the show’s storyline.
