CoinMarketCap Removes Wallet Scam Code, Security Probe Ongoing
In a recent development, CoinMarketCap has confirmed the removal of its malicious wallet scam code, following a security breach that left users concerned about their account safety. The platform has simultaneously launched an ongoing investigation to uncover the extent of the issue and prevent future occurrences.
According to reports, the scam involved a fake wallet verification prompt that appeared as a popup on CoinMarketCap, tricking users into connecting their wallets and approving access to ERC-20 tokens. Multiple users flagged it as a phishing attempt, with warnings posted on social media.
CoinMarketCap has since acknowledged the issue, stating that it is “aware of a malicious popup prompting users to ‘Verify Wallet’ on our site.” The platform promptly removed the code but continues its investigation to determine how the scam was inserted into its website and for how long it remained active. CoinMarketCap has not disclosed any further information regarding the breach.
This incident follows a major data breach in October 2021, where hackers accessed and leaked over 3.1 million user email addresses from CoinMarketCap. The stolen data was later found on hacking forums and confirmed by security tracker Have I Been Pwned.
