Android and iPhone users have been warned against a new threat in the form of malware that can steal all their photos, without any discrimination or discretion. The malicious app has made its way into both the official app stores, targeting Android and iPhone devices with an insidious approach.
According to a report by Kaspersky’s malware analysts, Sergey Puzan and Dmitry Kalinin, this threat campaign has been active since at least February 2024. This is not only alarming but also a serious concern for users who have installed these apps on their smartphones.
The malware, known as SparkKitty, can indiscriminately steal all the images from your smartphone’s photo gallery. The report reveals that this malware may be related to an earlier threat called SparkCat, which specifically targeted images of cryptocurrency wallet recovery “seed” phrases stored on infected phones.
At the time of writing, both apps have been removed from their respective app stores. The Kaspersky team has identified the apps as 币coin for iPhone and SOEX for Android. Users who have either of these apps on their smartphone should delete them immediately to avoid any potential damage or loss of sensitive data.
It is worth noting that a Google spokesperson stated that the developer of the Android app has been banned, and that “Android users are automatically protected against this app regardless of download source by Google Play Protect, which is enabled by default on Android devices with Google Play Services.”
