Title: I moved to Dubai and paid 0% tax – on paper it had everything but now you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to move back
As the lavish wedding of Jeff Bezos’ girlfriend Lauren Sanchez takes over the headlines, many are left wondering what could possibly drive celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Khloe to uproot their lives in Los Angeles and relocate to Dubai. It’s not just the allure of tax-free living that has drawn me to this desert metropolis – though it’s undeniable a significant draw. I made the move three years ago, expecting an easy life of sunshine, luxury, and financial freedom.
And for a while, it seemed like my dream had come true. Dubai offered a 0% income tax rate, allowing me to keep every Dirham I earned. It was a temptation too great to resist – who wouldn’t want to save millions on their annual tax bill? The Instagram-perfect lifestyle, endless sunshine, and zero capital gains tax only strengthened the allure.
But as the initial novelty wore off, reality set in. While the tax benefits are undeniably enticing, it’s not the only thing Dubai has to offer – or take away, for that matter. My once-peaceful neighborhood became a cacophony of construction noise and chaos, threatening to shatter my eardrums at all hours of the day.
And don’t even get me started on the social media influencer culture. What I thought was a peaceful escape from the madness turned out to be a hotbed for over-the-top extravagance, with influencers flaunting their wealth and excess on every corner. The constant noise and ostentation were slowly suffocating my soul.
Fast-forward three years, and I’m still living in Dubai, but now it’s not just about avoiding taxes – it would take a king’s ransom to persuade me to return to the West Coast.
