Since the outcome on June 24, Trump has taken to Truth Social to lambast Mamdani’s victory, labeling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” who will ruin the city.
Mamdani’s rise has sparked a coordinated effort among pro-Trump billionaires and influencers to stop his mayoralty bid. Bill Ackman, a billionaire with close ties to the Trump administration, is willing to fund a “centrist” candidate willing to challenge Mamdani in November. The real estate mogul believes that Mamdani’s housing policy will make New York City “economically unviable.”
Conservative pundits and commentators have joined the fray, smearing Mamdani with Islamophobic and anti-immigrant attacks. Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, tweeted an old post from 2013 by Mamdani, taken out of context, to claim that he is an anti-white racist. He then called for Mamdani’s deportation.
Other influential voices have also weighed in on the matter, with Trump and some Democrats joining forces against the socialist candidate. For instance, liberal Democrat Larry Summers criticized Mamdani’s housing policy, warning it will exacerbate issues around affordability.
