‘Tron: Ares’ Will Have Nine Inch Nails at Their Most Industrial Rock
More than a year before its release date of October 10, Disney has dropped some exciting news about the upcoming Tron sequel. For the first time in their collaboration with film scores, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have decided to take on the project under their iconic industrial rock alias, Nine Inch Nails.
As revealed in an exclusive interview with Empire Magazine, Reznor described the soundtrack as “not one second of orchestra.” Instead, it seems that Tron: Ares will be a full-on industrial rock score. According to the composer, this choice was intentional, as they aimed to create music that would not sound “fucking pompous” in its attempt to elevate the visuals on screen.
What does this mean for fans? It means that Nine Inch Nails are gearing up to deliver their most industrial and aggressive score yet. Reznor emphasized that the music is meant to be “precise and unpleasant at times,” without crossing the line into “atonal and punishing” territory. This approach aligns with the themes of the film, as it delves into the story of Jared Leto’s Ares leaving the digital space for the human world.
The dynamic duo, who have previously worked on scores like Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Soul, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Naughty Dog’s upcoming sci-fi adventure Intergalactic: The Lost Prophet, aim to tap into the emotions of the artificial characters in Tron: Ares. These include Ares and Jodie Turner-Smith’s Athena, who are meant to be infused with feelings and emotions as they question their purpose and replaceability.
Disney has already given us a glimpse at some of this new score during the D23 2024 presentation, where Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jeff Bridges debuted footage from the film.
