Two years later, Meta is making DMs on Threads official
Meta has made good on its promise to bring direct messages (DMs) to its social media platform, Threads. Just a couple of weeks after announcing the test phase for this feature, the company has decided to roll it out to all adult users.
The updated version of the app will now include a messaging tab where users can access their inbox and exchange DMs with mutual followers from Instagram or other users who follow them back. However, there are some limitations to this feature. For now, only users over the age of 18 will be able to send messages, and group messaging is not supported.
The company had previously been opposed to introducing DMs on Threads, citing concerns that it would create unnecessary redundancy with Instagram’s messaging system. But as the platform has grown to more than 350 million users, Meta seems to have changed its stance. In fact, the company notes that over a third of daily Threads users follow different accounts on Threads compared to Instagram, indicating that the app is carving out its own unique user base.
In addition to rolling out DMs, Meta is also shifting its focus away from positioning Threads as just another offshoot of Instagram and instead towards establishing it as an alternative to other social media platforms like X. This change in direction has seen the company experiment with new features that allow users to find familiar creators on both platforms, as well as make trending topics more prominent in the app.
To further enhance the real-time conversation aspect of Threads, a “highlighter” feature is also being added. This will enable users to make trends even more visible in their feeds.
The rollout of DMs marks an important milestone for Meta’s social media platform, and it remains to be seen how this development will impact the way users interact with each other on the app.
