Pet Insurer Charged £250 Excess THREE Times After Our Black Labrador’s Single Operation
I recently received a disturbing letter from my pet insurer, John Lewis, underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance, regarding an unexpected and excessive bill. Despite the successful operation on our beloved black labrador retriever Vicki, the insurance company decided to charge me not one, not two, but three excesses of £250 each. I was stunned.
As you may know, Vicki had been experiencing some lumps on her skin, which turned out to be non-cancerous tumours. We took her to the vet, and after analysis, it became clear that all the growths were benign. Nevertheless, the financial shock of receiving three excess charges for a single operation is still unsettling.
When Sally Hamilton from The Daily Mail contacted John Lewis about this situation, she was told that the policy explicitly states that an excess must be paid for ‘each accident or illness’. While I understand that this might be true, it seemed excessive to charge multiple times. Sally checked on my behalf, and unfortunately, the company remained confident in its original assessment.
It’s essential to take control of your pet insurance policies. Don’t assume that one-size-fits-all coverage will protect you from unexpected veterinary bills. Understand your policy terms and conditions before signing up or making any changes.
The takeaway message here is clear: when dealing with unexpected vet visits, communication and persistence can make a significant difference in resolving issues.
