A mysterious interstellar object has appeared in our solar system, and astronomers are scrambling to learn more about it. The object, designated as A11pl3Z, is thought to be around 12 miles (20 kilometers) in diameter and its trajectory suggests that it originated outside of the solar system.
At twice the height of Mount Everest, this would be the third interstellar object ever found, following ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and a comet called 2I/Borisov in 2019. To observe A11pl3Z, astronomers will use telescopes around the world, including a virtual telescope that plans to share real-time images online.
Despite its size, A11pl3Z is too dim to be seen with the naked eye or even with backyard telescopes. However, this opportunity to witness an interstellar object is not lost; the Virtual Telescope Project will host an online observation on YouTube at 6:00 p.m. EDT on July 3, 2025.
As A11pl3Z approaches its perihelion in October, astronomers are concerned about its potential impact on Earth, but rest assured that it poses no danger to our planet.
