Slow Turnover on the Billboard Charts Isn’t Just a U.S. Trend – It’s Global
As we move into the second half of 2025, it’s evident that the stagnant state of the Billboard charts is not an isolated phenomenon exclusive to the United States alone. In fact, this trend has taken on a global dimension, with the recent chart movements mirroring the same sluggishness witnessed domestically.
The latest figures from Luminate reveal that Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” sits atop the July 4-dated Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a seventh consecutive week. While impressive in terms of longevity, this number marks a significant downturn in global streams, with only seven songs managing to surpass the 50 million-mark outside the United States since the beginning of the year. This stark contrast to 17 and 14 songs that achieved this feat during the same period last year and two years ago, respectively.
In a shocking twist, Jimmy Fontaine’s “Rock Your Body” – originally released in 2009 as part of the Black Eyed Peas’ track with the same name – has recently experienced a revival fueled by its newfound popularity on TikTok. This unexpected resurgence brings new life to this classic hit and could be a turning point in addressing the slow turnover.
The global charts, once a bastion for international talent, have seen an alarming decline in the representation of non-English language hits. Only six songs from this year feature lyrics not in English, with Bad Bunny leading the charge, followed closely by fellow K-pop sensations ROSÉ and JENNIE. The dominance of these artists’ collaborative efforts has resulted in a near-total lack of innovation, stifling the growth of new talent.
