A Florida teenager has been arrested for allegedly making threatening phone calls to a McDonald’s restaurant after his $5 meal deal was messed up.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, Dayton Schaffer, 18, made three threatening phone calls to the north Lakeland location at approximately 11:30 p.m. on June 30.
Schaffer reportedly admitted to making the calls when questioned by authorities. In a bizarre twist, he claimed that his actions were motivated by McDonald’s failure to fulfill his $5 meal deal correctly.
In a statement, the sheriff’s department stated, “We didn’t get the punchline,” implying that Schaffer’s threats were perceived as unfunny and serious enough to warrant an arrest.
The 18-year-old has been charged with a false report concerning the use of a firearm against a person(s) and misuse of a two-way communication device. The charges carry potential penalties of up to a decade in prison, further emphasizing the gravity of Schaffer’s alleged actions.
It is unclear whether the teen has retained an attorney or entered a plea at this time.
