Pixar’s ‘Elio’ Bombs at Box Office After Reportedly Removing Queer Elements
The long-awaited animated film “Elio” has received a dismal opening weekend box office performance after rumors of the removal of queer elements swirled. According to The Hollywood Reporter, several Pixar staff members have expressed their disappointment and frustration with the final cut, claiming that LGBTQ themes were significantly toned down from the original script.
In a shocking revelation, sources close to the production revealed that the film’s initial portrayal of main character Elio as a queer-coded character was heavily edited out following feedback from top executives. This drastic change in the narrative resulted in a significant departure from the original vision of director Adrian Molina, who is openly gay and reportedly “hurt” after his conversation with Pixar COO Peter Docter.
The movie’s underwhelming performance has left many in the industry baffled, particularly considering the film’s $200 million budget and prolonged delays. Critics are now pointing to the reported removal of LGBTQ elements as a potential contributing factor to the disaster at the box office.
This isn’t the first controversy surrounding Pixar and Disney regarding LGBTQ themes in their films. In 2022, it was reported that same-sex kiss scenes were initially removed from “Lightyear,” only to be reinstated for the theatrical release. The studio has also faced criticism over its handling of a female cyclops character mentioning her girlfriend in the animated film “Onward” released in 2020.
As the film’s dismal performance continues to spark debate, it remains unclear if this move will prompt any changes within the company or lead to further controversy.
