Slate Auto drops “under $20,000” pricing after Trump administration ends federal EV tax credit
In a surprising move, Slate Auto has stopped promoting the starting price of its all-electric pickup truck as “under $20,000” following the passage of President Trump’s tax cut bill. The change comes after it was revealed that the federal EV tax credit, which would have helped the vehicle clear the mark with a starting price of $19,500, will be discontinued in September.
When Slate Auto emerged from stealth mode in April, it heavily emphasized that its electric pickup truck would start at an affordable “under $20,000” price point. This language was still present on the company’s website as recently as yesterday, according to the Web Archive. However, the change suggests that the startup is reevaluating its pricing strategy in response to the tax credit’s expiration.
The company has not provided a precise price for the vehicle sans-federal tax credit, and it remains unclear what the actual starting price will be. A Slate spokesperson declined to comment on the change, leaving many questions unanswered about the EV’s new price point.
Slate Auto had previously stated that its business model is built around offering highly customizable options, which may limit the appeal of the base model.
