AJ McLean, a member of the legendary boy band Backstreet Boys, has shared his thoughts and memories about his friend and fellow musician Liam Payne, one half of the group One Direction. In a recent interview with Today, McLean revealed that Payne had shared some unreleased music with him before his untimely death.
Payne, 28, tragically passed away after falling from the fourth floor of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October 2024. The singer-songwriter was known for his work with One Direction and as a solo artist, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire fans worldwide.
McLean spoke highly of Payne, describing him as an “absolute sweetheart” who was not only talented but also witty and funny. He revealed that the latter had shared some unreleased music with him before his passing, stating that it is “beautiful.”
“I thought that was really sweet that he would entrust someone that he’s still learning about to give their opinion,” McLean said in the interview. “I thought it was a great body of work. And I hope that the world and that the fans get to hear it somewhere down the road.”
The two musicians had formed an unlikely friendship while working together on Netflix series Building the Band, which aimed to help hopeful singers form musical groups based solely on their vocal talent, without any consideration for physical appearance.
It is worth noting that Payne’s sister, Ruth Gibbins, recently expressed her gratitude and heartfelt sentiments towards the upcoming show.
